College Baseball vs Softball: By the Numbers
At Dugout Sports, we cover both D1 college baseball and softball. We built the platform to handle both sports from day one because we believe both deserve the same level of coverage. But how do they actually compare?
By the Field
The differences start with the field itself. Baseball uses a 90-foot diamond with a 60'6" pitching distance. Softball uses a 60-foot diamond with a 43-foot pitching distance. The shorter distances in softball mean faster reaction times for batters and fielders.
Despite the smaller field, softball games can be just as strategic. The rise of the slap game, aggressive base running, and the dominance of elite pitchers who can throw 70+ mph (equivalent to 90+ mph in baseball when adjusted for distance) make softball its own distinct sport with its own analytics.
Programs and Coverage
Division I has over 300 baseball programs and over 280 softball programs. That's 580+ teams generating thousands of games every season. Yet media coverage is heavily skewed toward baseball, and softball coverage often falls to niche outlets.
That's part of why we built Dugout Sports for both. Every softball team gets the same team page, roster, schedule, and stat tracking that every baseball team gets. The sport toggle at the top of the site switches the entire experience between baseball and softball.
Scoring Patterns
Baseball tends to be higher-scoring on average, but softball can produce dramatic offensive games too. Run differentials in softball tend to be wider because a dominant pitcher can completely shut down an opposing lineup, leading to more lopsided results.
The Opportunity
College softball viewership has grown significantly in recent years. The Women's College World Series regularly draws millions of viewers, and individual programs have massive, passionate fan bases. Parents, recruits, and fans deserve the same data tools for softball that exist for baseball.
That's why every feature we build — scores, rankings, stat leaders, standings, player profiles — works for both sports. Switch to softball mode and explore.
