Michigan Wolverines defeat Bowling Green Falcons at Ray Fisher Stadium
Campbell and Culbertson drive in five combined runs as Michigan's offense outlasts a Falcons surge
Michigan defeated Bowling Green 7-5 at Ray Fisher Stadium on the strength of a massive early offensive outburst, as Josh Campbell and Drew Culbertson combined for five RBI to power the Wolverines past the Falcons. The game was decided in the opening innings, where both offenses put up crooked numbers before Michigan's bullpen steadied the ship and held on for the final two frames.
The first inning defined the game entirely. Bowling Green wasted no time putting pressure on Michigan starter Preston Barr, as Sam Seidel delivered a three-RBI hit and Lance Vickers added an RBI to stake the Falcons to an early multi-run lead, with Carter Mottice chipping in another RBI before the inning was through. By the time Michigan came to the plate in the bottom of the first, Bowling Green appeared to have seized control.
Michigan answered with a bottom half that buried Falcons starter Luke Krouse. Colby Turner drove in a run to get the Wolverines on the board, and Josh Campbell followed with a three-RBI hit that swung the momentum completely. Drew Culbertson then delivered twice in the same inning, accounting for four RBI across two separate plate appearances, and Cooper Mullens added another RBI for good measure. Evan Haeger reached base twice and scored twice during the frame, providing key table-setting at the top of the order alongside Joonsung Park, who also scored twice. By the time the carnage was done, Michigan had sent a parade of runners home and turned what looked like an early Bowling Green advantage into a comfortable Wolverines lead.
Krouse took the loss in tough fashion, allowing six hits and six earned runs in three innings without recording a strikeout, walking three. Joseph Buchanan and Ethan Papacek worked in relief for Bowling Green, with Papacek particularly effective, spinning 1.2 scoreless innings and fanning two while limiting Michigan to no hits and two walks. Seidel continued to haunt Michigan throughout, adding another three-RBI performance in a later at-bat to keep the Falcons within striking distance, finishing the game with six RBI on the day. Mottice also added a second RBI hit, and the Bowling Green lineup showed legitimate pop — Andrew DiLodovico went 2-for-3 to pace the Falcons in hits — but the deficit proved too steep to climb.
On the Michigan side, Grant Bradley inherited the lead and worked 4.1 innings in relief, allowing five earned runs on six hits but keeping the Wolverines ahead. Barr, who opened the game, threw 1.2 hitless innings with two strikeouts before handing the ball over. Wyatt Novara closed out the final 0.1 innings to secure the result. Campbell's three-RBI performance was the game's single most impactful blow, arriving at a moment when Michigan needed to flip the script in a hurry.
With the victory, Michigan improved to 24-16 overall in Big Ten play, keeping pace in conference standings heading into a home matchup with Washington on Friday. Bowling Green, now 19-29 in the Mid-American Conference, will return home to host Toledo on the same day, looking to stop a slide that has seen the Falcons drop well below .500 as the regular season winds toward its conclusion.
